Four Days of Bliss: A Getaway in the Dominican Republic

This summer, my daughter, her partner and I escaped the big city hussle for a four-day adventure in the Dominican Republic—and it was nothing short of magical. From the moment we landed in the partly thatched roofed efficient airport .  Immediately, we felt the warmth of the island’s charm, both in its people and its stunning landscapes.

Arrival and Resort Life

After landing, we enjoyed a smooth drive to our resort in a gated, deluxe community. The resort itself was a vision of elegance, with a welcoming entrance. One of the highlights was The Spa near the Westin Hotel, where we stayed, an independent facility in the community offering serene treatments and a perfect escape within the escape. And then there was the beach—soft white sand slipping through our toes and crystal-clear waters stretching as far as the eye could see, the perfect backdrop for relaxing or strolling in the gentle waves.

Culinary Adventures

Food is always a big part of travel, and here it did not disappoint. We enjoyed a delectable Japanese dinner at the hotel, followed the next morning with a buffet breakfast that was picture-perfect, presented on several large tables and was delicious. Each meal felt like an experience in itself, from the flavours to the tropical atmosphere that made every bite feel like a celebration.

Village Vibes

Venturing beyond the resort, we explored a charming nearby shopping area, in Punta Cana Village, which the locals simply call ‘The Village’. Quaint boutiques lined the small streets, offering unique local finds, and the lively atmosphere made every turn exciting. For lunch, we discovered Pepe’s Tavern, renowned for its fresh ceviche, and later La Casita de Yeya, which served up  Dominican dishes that were both satisfying and memorable.

Santo Domingo Adventures

A highlight of the trip was visiting Santo Domingo. Travelling in comfort with a limo driver, we arrived at the historic Cathedral Basilica of Santo Domingo, an awe-inspiring landmark that made history feel alive. At the cathedral, we stumbled upon a local woman in a flowing wedding dress being photographed for what we assumed was an ad—a fleeting, magical moment. Cafes and local shops added charm, and the main shopping street was perfect for strolling, soaking in both culture and the vibrant city energy. A main attraction of Calle El Conde, was a statue of the founder, Christoper Columbus; his very first stop where he discovered the Americas. The island, known as Hispaniola, comprises Haiti to the west and the Dominican Republic to the east.

Hidden Gems and Local Favourites

True adventures lie off the beaten path, and Santo Domingo delivered. We were told about  Maraca, a numberless, signless restaurant, cherished by residents, a hidden gem that gave us a taste of authentic Dominican cuisine—an experience that would have been impossible in the usual tourist spots. Maraca and its menu proved unbeatably delicious, and the envir, vibrant, irresistibly charming—an escape that left me longing to return.

Four days felt like both a blink and an eternity in paradise. Between the luxury of the resort, the rejuvenation at The Spa, the culinary delights, and the charm of Santo Domingo, this trip was a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration.
